Overview

A well-defined chin helps give balance to the face and creates a major part of one's profile. When people look in the mirror, most focus on the size and shape of their noses, ears, sagging jowls, or fine wrinkling of the skin. However, having a weak chin is certainly not an asset. Chin augmentation, through the use of synthetics (Mentoplasty) or biologicals (Genioplasty with bone advancement), can make the chin more prominent. This procedure can give balance to an otherwise less defined face or further augment an already existing chin structure. Many times, a cosmetic surgeon may recommend chin surgery to a patient having nose surgery to achieve facial proportion, as the size of the chin may magnify or minimize the perceived size of the nose.

Description

Chin augmentation surgery enhances the chin's prominence and creates a balanced facial profile. Originally used for reconstruction due to birth defects and trauma-related incidents, chin implants are now applied aesthetically to enhance a person's chin or to create symmetry within the facial structure of a weak chin. With a chin implant, the face is transformed into a more aesthetically pleasing shape.

Consultation

During the consultation, your doctor will discuss your goals and explain what can be achieved realistically. The typical goal is to correct a lacking chin. Discuss with your surgeon the goals and general results you would like to achieve. Your doctor will take into account your facial dimensions and natural face shape. The placement and size of the chin implants will be determined by you and your doctor. Don't be afraid to speak your mind during this time.

Procedure

Chin augmentation surgery is performed using light sleep or general anesthesia and takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. The steps are as follows:
  • Anesthesia: Light sleep anesthesia or general anesthesia is administered.
  • Incision: An incision is made where the mouth gums and lip/facial skin meet or under the chin.
  • Pocket Creation: The skin is separated from the underlying tissue to create a pocket.
  • Implant Insertion: The chin implant is inserted into the pocket and placed either on or directly below the existing chin bone.
  • Closure: The incision is closed with sutures.
The procedure may be longer if combined with other cosmetic surgeries, such as cheek implants.

After Surgery

  • Pain Management: Pain medication is prescribed to manage any discomfort.
  • Post-Procedure Care: Patients may experience numbness that should disappear within 1 to 3 months. A support brace may be worn while sleeping to allow tissues and the implant to heal in the desired position.
  • Swelling and Bruising: Swelling and bruising are expected but will begin to disappear within the first 5-7 days. Swelling may persist for months but will be minor and hardly noticeable.
  • Activity Restrictions: Regular activities can be resumed within 1 to 5 days, but exercise should be avoided for the first three weeks.
  • Work: Most patients return to work within a week or two due to bruising and swelling.

Results

The results of chin augmentation surgery are immediate, although initial swelling may make the implant appear too large. Most patients are very satisfied with the augmentation results, achieving a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing facial profile.

Complications

  • Hematoma: Blood clots may form.
  • Numbness: Nerve damage can cause numbness.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Skin discolorations caused by bruising.
  • Implant Shifting: This may require additional surgery to reposition the implant.
  • Asymmetry: Tissues may heal differently, causing asymmetry.
  • Bone Resorption: Pressure from the implant can cause bone resorption under the implant.
