Overview

Every year, one hundred thousand men and women choose blepharoplasty to improve the way they look. Droopy eyelids can make you look older and can also impair vision. Blepharoplasty corrects these problems and also removes puffiness and bags under the eyes that make you look worn and tired. This procedure cannot alter dark circles, fine lines, and wrinkles around the eyes, nor can it change sagging eyebrows.

Description

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, removes excess fat, muscle, and skin from both the upper and lower lids, resulting in a refreshed appearance with a younger, firmer eye area. This procedure enhances self-confidence by correcting facial flaws and signs of premature aging.

Consultation

During the pre-surgical consultation, you will be examined or asked to answer questions concerning vision, tear production, use of lenses, and your desire for surgery. Your surgeon will explain what you can expect from blepharoplasty and take a complete medical history. Factors such as age, skin type, ethnic background, and degree of vision obstruction will be considered.

Procedure

Blepharoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. The steps are as follows:
  • Marking and Incision:
    • Upper Eyelid Surgery: The surgeon marks individual lines and creases to keep scars as invisible as possible. Excess fat, muscle, and loose skin are removed, and fine sutures close the incisions.
    • Lower Eyelid Surgery: The incision is made along the lash line and the smile creases. Excess fat, muscle, and skin are trimmed away, and fine sutures close the incision.
    • Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty: For puffiness caused by excess fat, the incision is made inside the lower eyelid, and excess fatty material is removed. Sutures, if used, are self-dissolving and leave no visible scar.
  • Duration: The procedure takes from one to two hours under normal conditions.

After Surgery

  • Post-Procedure Care: Tiny sterile bandages may be applied, except for transconjunctival blepharoplasty. An ointment may be used to prevent dryness of the eye area.
  • Swelling and Bruising: A certain degree of swelling and bruising is normal. Cold compresses and head elevation when lying down will enhance healing and relieve discomfort.
  • Medication: Your surgeon will prescribe medication for discomfort.
  • Eye Care: For a week and a half following surgery, clean the eye area and use eyedrops if recommended.
  • Activity Restrictions: Avoid certain activities and environments as advised by your surgeon.
  • Stitch Removal: Stitches will be removed in three to five days after surgery. Self-absorbing stitches will dissolve on their own.

Results

Blepharoplasty can result in a refreshed and more youthful appearance. By correcting droopy eyelids and removing puffiness and bags under the eyes, this procedure enhances overall facial aesthetics and self-confidence.

Complications

  • Swelling and Bruising: Some degree of swelling and bruising is normal.
  • Discomfort: Mild discomfort, dryness, and itchiness may occur.
  • Scarring: Scars are typically minimal and hidden along natural folds and creases.
