Overview

A conventional face-lift and neck liposuction can smooth and tighten the skin of the neck but does not address the underlying muscle weakness that comes with aging. The neck muscles weaken over time, leading to a sunken appearance in the middle of the neck and sagging skin, often referred to as a "turkey wattle." A neck lift tightens these underlying muscles, restoring a youthful appearance and reducing the likelihood of further sagging. This procedure is usually performed in conjunction with a facelift and neck liposuction.

Description

A neck lift is performed on an outpatient basis in our office using local anesthesia and sedation. With local anesthesia, you will be awake but anesthetized and relaxed during the procedure. The surgery typically takes about one hour, depending on the extent of the procedure.

Procedure

  • Incision: A small incision is made under the chin.
  • Muscle Tightening: The edges of the platysmal muscles (running down the neck) are located, drawn together, and stitched at the midline.
  • Muscle Sling Formation: The back portion of these sheet-like muscles is tightened and fixed at the back of the neck on either side, forming a strong sling that supports the entire neck and jaw.
  • Liposuction (if necessary): Can be performed through the same incision.
  • Closure and Dressing: The incision is stitched up, and a soft dressing is placed around the head to protect the incisions.

After Surgery

  • Numbness and Swelling: Some numbness, mild swelling, and discomfort at the incision site are normal and will pass with time. Incision site pain is usually minimal and can be controlled with medication if necessary.
  • Cold Compresses: Swelling can be treated with cold compresses.
  • Severe Pain: Contact our office immediately if you experience severe pain.
  • Activity: Within two days, you should be up and about, but continue to take it easy.
  • Dressings: The soft dressing around the head is usually removed within a day or so, with smaller bandages used for several days afterward. All dressings are removed within three to four days.
  • Movement Restrictions: DO NOT turn your head for a few weeks to allow the muscles time to heal.
  • Pain Management: Pain medication may be prescribed and pain will subside after the first few days.
  • Regular Activity: You may resume regular activity within a week.
  • Swelling: Swelling diminishes within two weeks and new facial contours emerge within four to six weeks.

Complications

As with any surgery, there is a risk of complications. Complications associated with liposuction are usually minor and pass with time. Possible complications include bruising, infection, and reactions to the anesthesia. You can reduce your risk of complications by closely following instructions both before and after surgery.
