Overview

Nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, aims to enhance the nose's appearance by understanding nasal anatomy, patient aspirations, techniques, and cultural trends. While beauty standards vary, a straight, long, narrow nose with a sharp tip is often desired. It’s crucial to remember that cosmetic surgery can enhance looks but not completely alter one's appearance.

Description

Ideal noses have a straight bridge, a tip forming a 100-degree angle with the upper lip, and well-defined, symmetrical features. A thorough self-evaluation involves assessing the nose from front and profile views for projection, rotation, and symmetry.

Consultation

Dr. Chaudhari uses state-of-the-art computer imaging to visualize desired changes, allowing for detailed discussions and realistic planning. Discuss your medical history, including medications and smoking habits, to tailor the procedure safely.

Procedure

  • Anesthesia: Local anesthesia with mild sedation, keeping you relaxed and insensitive to pain.
  • Incision:
    • Open Rhinoplasty: Incisions inside the nostrils extending over the columella.
    • Closed Rhinoplasty: Incisions made inside the nose without extending over the columella.
  • Skin Separation: The skin is separated from the bone and cartilage.
  • Sculpting: Bone and cartilage are sculpted to the desired shape.
  • Redraping:The skin is redraped over the new framework.
  • Nostril Adjustment: If necessary, small wedges of skin are removed from the nostril base.

After Surgery

  • Immediately After Surgery:
    • Sleeping: Elevate your head on two pillows.
    • Swelling & Bruising: Use ice compresses for 48 hours, then intermittently for one week.
  • First Week:
    • Activity Restrictions: Avoid talking, laughing, visitors, and significant effort. Do not make head movements.
    • Nasal Care: Expect a stuffy nose due to packing or a splint. Use gauze to catch blood, and do not insert anything into the nose.
    • Wound Care: Clean nostrils with diluted hydrogen peroxide and apply antibiotic ointment.
  • Hygiene: Bathe after 24 hours without getting bandages wet. Brush teeth gently, use mouthwash, and wash hair with help.
  • Sleeping: Sleep on your back with your head elevated for six weeks, using pillows to avoid turning to your side.
  • Pain & Medications: Avoid alcohol and legal decisions while on medications. Do not take aspirin or vitamin E for two weeks post-surgery.
  • Diet: Follow a light diet to avoid nausea. Avoid chewy foods for one week. Any loss of taste or smell will return.
  • Eyeglasses: Avoid glasses that rest on nasal bones for six weeks.
  • Activity Level:Avoid activities elevating blood pressure for five days. Bed rest is recommended for 48 hours, with light walking or exercise permitted after six weeks.

Results

Initial nosebleeds and discomfort are normal. Swelling and bruising peak within 48 hours and gradually subside. Full healing takes up to 12 months, with progressive improvement.

Complications

  • Hematoma: Blood clots may form.
  • Numbness: Possible nerve damage causing numbness.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Bruising may cause skin discoloration.
  • Asymmetry: Healing tissues may lead to asymmetry.
  • Infection: Risk of infection at incision sites.
  • Scarring: Potential for visible scarring, though incisions are placed to minimize this.

Additional Information

  • Medications: Consult Dr. Chaudhari about regular medications. Avoid vitamin E, aspirin, and hormone replacement therapy before surgery.
  • Clothing: Wear loose-fitting clothes that do not need to be put on over your head. Do not wear makeup, nail polish, or cosmetics. Wear glasses instead of contact lenses.
  • Smoking: Stop smoking before surgery as it irritates nasal passages and slows healing.
  • Pre & Post-Operatively: Report any signs of illness before surgery. Arrange for transportation and nearby accommodation if needed.
  • Pre-Operative Instructions: Follow doctor’s directions for medications. Shower and wash your face with mild soap. Remove all makeup, jewelry, and nail polish.
