Overview

Varicose and spider veins are visible veins under the skin, often appearing on the legs and sometimes on the face. Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that may cause discomfort, while spider veins are smaller, web-like veins visible on the skin's surface.

Description

Varicose veins are classified into three main types based on their location and characteristics:
  • Varicosity of the Long Saphenous Vein
  • Varicosity of the Short Saphenous Vein
  • Atypical varicose veins that occur in a small group of people
The veins of the legs include deep veins (within muscles) and superficial veins (near the skin's surface). Varicose veins often result from malfunctioning valves in superficial veins, leading to blood pooling and vein enlargement.

Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Chaudhari will assess your vein condition, symptoms, and medical history, and discuss treatment options. Treatment decisions will depend on the type, severity, and location of your veins.

Procedure

Treatment options include:
  • Sclerotherapy: Injection of a solution into veins to collapse them.
  • Endovenous Laser Ablation (ELT): Laser energy is applied inside the vein to seal it shut.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation: Heat generated by radiofrequency energy closes the vein.
  • Electrodesiccation: Electric current through a probe to destroy vein walls.
  • Laser Treatment: Laser energy is applied to spider veins to shrink them.

After Surgery

    • Recovery varies depending on the procedure but may involve mild discomfort, bruising, and temporary restrictions on physical activity.
    • Post-treatment care includes wearing compression stockings and avoiding prolonged standing or sun exposure.

Results

    Results typically include:
    • Reduction in the appearance of varicose and spider veins.
    • Relief from discomfort such as pain, swelling, and heaviness in the legs.
    • Improved cosmetic appearance of treated areas.

Complications

Possible complications include temporary bruising, skin discoloration, swelling, and rarely, skin necrosis or allergic reactions. Dr. Chaudhari will discuss these risks during your consultation and provide personalized advice.
